19:00、中学校の下校時刻。誰もいなくなった校舎に響く、優しくも力強い歌声がありました。当時、放送委員だった私が校内放送で毎日流していた曲、それがマイケル・ジャクソンの"Heal the World"でした。
正直に告白すれば、当時の私は英語に全く興味がありませんでした。それどころか、大人たちに反抗し、問題を起こし、他人の痛みなど想像することさえできない未熟な少年でした。英語教師になるなんて、夢にも思っていなかったあの頃。そんな私がなぜこの曲を選んでいたのか——。理屈ではなく、その歌声に「頼もしさ」を感じていたのかもしれません。
「世界をより良くする」という使命の再発見
44歳になり、教育者として、そして一人の世界人として活動する今、改めてこの歌詞が胸に突き刺さります。

言語を教えること。それは単に単語や文法を詰め込むことではありません。生徒たちに、この広い世界で何が起きているかを知るための「窓」を与え、他者を尊重し、繋がりを作るための「道具」を渡すことです。ユネスコが提唱する「グローバル・シチズンシップ教育（GCED）」が目指すのは、まさに平和で公正な社会を作るための市民を育てることですが、私の原点はあの放送室にありました。
共感が育む「利他的な学び」
近年の教育心理学では、Social Emotional Learning (SEL)、すなわち「社会情緒的学習」の重要性が叫ばれています。音楽や芸術を通じて他者への共感力を養うことは、言語習得の障壁となる不安（Affective Filter）を取り除くだけでなく、学習の動機を「自分のため」から「誰かの役に立つため」へと昇華させます。
私が現在推進しているデジタル教育の形や、Global Classroomでの活動も、その根底は同じです。楽しく学び、文化を理解し、尊敬の念を持って世界と繋がること。マイケルのような巨大な発信力はなくても、目の前の子供たちを繋ぎ続けることで、それはやがて大きな愛や友情に変わると信じています。
次世代のために、今できること
私たちは今、分断や紛争が絶えない複雑な時代を生きています。しかし、だからこそ教育には希望が必要です。「世界を癒そう」というメッセージを、私はこれからも授業を通じて、またテクノロジーを通じて伝え続けます。自分の活動が間違っていないと、今の自分なら確信を持って言えます。

19:00—the time to leave school in junior high. In the quiet school building, a gentle yet powerful voice would echo through the speakers. Back then, as a member of the broadcasting committee, I played Michael Jackson’s "Heal the World" every single day.
To be honest, I had zero interest in English at that time. I was a rebellious teenager, often getting into trouble. I never imagined I would become an English teacher. But something about that voice felt "reliable" and comforting to me, even without understanding the words.
Rediscovering the Mission: "Make it a Better Place"
Now, at 44, as an educator and a global citizen, those lyrics resonate with me more deeply than ever.
"Make it a better place for you and for me..."
Teaching a language is about providing students with a "window" to see the world and giving them the "tools" to respect others and build connections. This aligns with Global Citizenship Education (GCED), fostering citizens who contribute to a more peaceful and just world.
Empathy Through Social Emotional Learning (SEL)
Developing empathy through music and art lowers the "Affective Filter" (anxiety) and shifts the motivation for learning from "self-interest" to "serving others." Whether through digital classroom initiatives or local teaching, the goal remains the same: connecting people through respect and understanding.
